This wonderful image is dated September 10, 1942 and shows Carolyn Darnell at age 6 years. The saddle shoes, pants suit and white collar are all emblematic of the androgyny of the first decade of life. At this age, the extensive and imaginative role playing games which children create involve such characters as monsters, thieves, animals and adult men and women. The fluidity with which young children alternate between these characters attests to how little affinity they feel to any one of them.
